November 23rd, 2006 - BVB holds its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to close out another successful season and plan ahead for more great things to come...
Last evening, the 2006 BVB Board of Executives hosted the 2006 AGM at the Great Lakes Grille. With all teams represented by their respective General Managers and a few sporadic league members, the meeting was another positive step in growth of this great league. Jim Hambrook (BVB President) summarized the 2006 season with different highlights of the passing season. The feedback was positive overall from the attending GMs and members and closing business was quickly reviewed.
Each of the 2006 BVB Board Directors gave reports on successes and items that will be focused on next year to improve upon. Financially, the League was able to stay in the "black"by a small margin despite rising costs to different operational aspects. Game and park scheduling was a focus discussion by the group. The year brought a number of difficult changes due to "mother nature" and park availability but, the league was able to "weather" it in order to complete the year. There is hope that this will not be as much of a factor next year but, only time will tell. There was also words of warning by Walter Lutz (VP of Ops) that umpire availability is a concern and the league body needs to assist with alleviating this. The League has lost a number of umpires due to personal reasons but, some were due to negative player interaction. These two factors have left the League in an uncomfortable situation heading into next season but, the Board will work to rectify this as quickly as possible by recruiting more umpires via outside resources and spring training camps.
Once the 2006 season business was concluded, the task of voting in the new 2007 BVB Board of Executives was executed. All members of the 2006 board were reappointed to their associated positions without contest from other BVB members. There were offers of assistance by other members of the League and they will be approached in the coming weeks for "At Large" positions on the Board if they so choose. After the Board vote-in, the discussion turned to 2007 season projections and suggestions. It was mentioned that there are two expansion teams applying to the League for the approaching season. This will provide many different possibilities with respect to the schedule and divisions in the league. The BVB Board will work to scrutinize the applying teams for their validity and provide suggested changes to the league landscape for the spring.
The workload is definitely not over for the Board, for they will be meeting next week on November 27th to interview applying expansion team(s) and discuss the different league tasks over the next two months. The first 2007 coach/manager meeting will be held in early January 2007 to negotiate and settle a number of the different topics. Keep an eye out for these developments as they occur. This BVB Sports writer is excited with the different possibilities the slated changes could bring to the League.

November 14th, 2006 - Casey Cosgrove gives local Burlington politics a great first outing shake-up...
Reporting to you back in early October, we informed you of one of BVB's own running for local Burlington Municipal politics as a Councilman in Ward 5. Casey Cosgrove, a meer"rookie" to the political ring, made a lot of noise in Burlington at the polls on November 13th. Although he lost, coming in second by a small margin of 480 votes, his strong finish was a good sign of his resolve and stature in the community. A platform constructed of top issues directly fed back to Casey from his constituents; the formula seamed to work with the area. With his political campaign only consisting of standard methods (pamphlets, signs and good old door to door canvassing) and his committee assembled of friends and family, Casey made a great outing at the poll stations.
Go to the City of Burlington Election Results website to see all the final facts and figures. As you can see, Casey gave the winner, Rick Goldring, a strong run for his money. He even beat out a projected favorite, Fred Suter, by a healthy margin. Viewing the vote totals, the top three were far ahead of the remaining candidates and Casey was in that mix.
BVB Baseball prides itself as being a contributing member of the Burlington community and Casey's political attempts was a great example of such. Congratulations to Casey for his excellent efforts. BVB Baseball will be there to support you with your future political efforts.
There is a selfish viewpoint from this sports writer that favors the fact that Casey can now hit the BVB yard next year without "politics" getting in the way! Just kidding Casey...congrats on your efforts!

October 23rd, 2006 - League completes the year BVB style..
The League held it's 2006 Season ender party on Friday October 20th at Great Lakes Grille. With a good turnout, the League celebrated another successful year of BVB. The attending members and fans enjoyed the company of others to throw stories and memories about the season of play.
Jim Hambrook (President) kicked off the evening with words or reflection about the 2006 BVB season. He also presented awards to recognize the players and teams that stood out among our great cast of league members. Below is a list of the award winners for the evening.
2006 Team MVP award winners
Cubs - Derek Vanesse
Cardinals - Jeff Gilleland
Indians - Jason McKay
Pirates - Stephen Blanchet
Red Sox - Mark Caron
Yankees - Scott Ranney
X-Men - Wes Puffer
2006 BVB Home Run Champ(s)
Jeff Gilleland - Cardinals
Casey Cosgrove - Hobos
Scott Ranney - Yankees
For its second year of existence, the Lutz Cup was presented to the 2006 Yankees for a great regular season record of 19-3. The 2006 Hobos were officially presented their Vintage Cup for winning the division title as well as the 2006 Cardinals were officially given their Legends Cup for their respective division win.
In order to reflect the 2006 year, Jim Hambrook reviewed the success of the League's venture at the Canadian Nationals in Yarmouth Nova Scotia. Despite not coming home with "hardware", the 35+ and 44+ squads did a great job at showing everyone what BVB is all about. The League also recognized a special member of the 2006 Nationals 44+ team, Doug Reid, with an appreciation award for his involvement in the Yarmouth tournament. Doug was originally slated to assist with coaching duties for the squad but, due to unforeseen circumstances, he was activated as a contributing player...and play he did. At the young age of 73, Doug showed us what a team sport is all about. Jim Hambrook presented Doug Reid with a plaque on behalf of the League for his role on the BVB squad, reflecting on the events that transpired to make him a legendary member of BVB baseball.

A great thanks goes out to those that contributed to the party, especially those that provided door prizes for the event. Most of those that attended were able to go home for the night with something in their hands. Also, many thanks to Karl and the gang at GLG for hosting our event again this year providing great drinks, food and a forum for the party.
This BVB Sports writer was proud to attend the evening for it was another great example of the strength of the league and what it represents. I will keep you abreast of BVB news over the winter months as we all count the days until the bats and gloves come out of the bag for another great season of Burlington Vintage Baseball.

September 24th, 2006 - Cardinals take the Legends series with the Indians by a 4 point spread...
THE CARDINALS WIN THE LEGENDS SERIES! The Indians and Cardinals squared of for game 3 of the Legends finals on Sunday. The weather was wet and field conditions were further damped by hard rains right before game time. This sports writer has no idea why the umpires did not call the Friday night games and this day's decision was no better.
The Cardinals took a first run lead in fashion of the last two games. The Indians, with a short bench again due to injuries, etc.., continued to struggle on the field and at the plate. Multiple errors and men left on base, the Cards walk through runs. The Cardinals experienced a blunder due to a hot headed player being tossed the inning before he was scheduled to pitch. The Indians took advantage of the situation by gaining back runs from walks and hits but, the Tribe just did not have the hearts or minds to finish. Errors on the defensive side and lackluster bats, the Indians failed to take higher ground on the scoreboard. The Cardinals took the game with three Indians on base, the winning run at 2nd and a fly ball at the plate.
This is the first Legends division win for the Cardinals in their two years of existence. A great news story for the young team ...literally. The Cardinals average team age is 35.8 years old with the next team being 38.7 (Red Sox).
Congrats to the Hobos and Cardinals for their divisional wins for the 2006 season. It was a good but, long season. I will keep you posted for all the off season wheelin' and dealin' that will be happening in the back boardrooms as teams re-evaluate the 2006 season and work to build for the spring. Talk to you soon BVB fans...

September 22nd, 2006 - Cardinals take game 2 with Indians for a tight score...Hobos complete a sweeping series against the Yanks to take the Vintage Cup for the second year in a row....
THE HOBOS WIN THE VINTAGE SERIES! The Hobos and Yankees took to the yard for game 3 of the series. The rain and wet field conditions created a slow and depressing situation but, with the Hobos up by two, they were certainly jacked to complete the finals in a sweep. The Hobos dominated play throughout the game with the score mounting. The Yanks pushed to match runs but, fell to a loss of 9-5. With a combined runs scored of 40-16, the Hobos take the Vintage series final with a sweep of 3-0.
This is the second year in a row for the Hobos. They dominated the first half of regular season but, were slowly knocked from the first place perch by the Yanks in time for the play-off seeding. With the Yankees late season push, they were looking to have the drive to take it all. They swept the Pirates in the first round but, they just did not seem to have the drive to compete with the Hobos in the finals. The Hobos played clean, avoided injury or a weak bench throughout the play-offs. An example of what it takes to be a competitive team in BVB. The Hobos will be partying through the weekend but, they will not take too much time before they start planning for a "three-peat" for the 2007 season.
The Indians faced the Cardinals for game 2 of the Legends finals on Friday as well. The weather did not co-operate with wet field conditions and rain continuing to dampen the situation. The Indians, with only a nine man bench available, showed to make up for the first game loss. The Cardinals, leading by two runs in the third inning, continued to bat the weak Indians pitching staff until returning pitcher Sean Clarke took the hill. With the verdict still out on how strong his physical condition was, Clarke showed what the Indians could be by pitching a no hitter 4th and 5th inning, gasing a few Cards along the way. The Indians took back the two run gap in the 4th and 5th inning along with putting up 4 more in the top of the 6th. The top part of the Cards lineup, a formidable batting force, matched up the 4 runs that included a three run homer by Hector Padilla (#10), his second for the series. With the score tied in the bottom of the 7th, the Cards took further advantage of the weakened Indians pitching to knock in a final run to close the game at 13-12. With two wins under their belt, the Cardinals will be looking to take game 3 against the Indians, who seem to have one foot in their grave already.
See you on Sunday at 3pm for the Legends finals game 3 at Nelson.

September 20th, 2006 - Cardinals and Indians go into extra inning to complete a high scoring game with the birds taking their first win...
The Indians and Cardinals started their final play-off series tonight. The Indians started the game by working both sides of the field for three innings with 5 runs on the board and keeping the Cardinals from scoring attempts. The next few innings showed differently with the Indians displaying a hurt and lacking bull-pen. With their top two pitchers and key defensive players out for the game, the remaining team could only keep up so long. The Cardinals pushed out a combined 14 runs in three innings to tie the score by the 6th inning. This included two home runs by Jeff Gilleland(#88)and one by Hector Padilla (#10).
The Indians suffered a number of injuries to slow the game play but, they were able to hold off the Cards to a tie in the 7th inning. With extra innings in the 8th and the clock ticking, the Indians scored an additional two runs to take the lead in the first half. The Cardinals then took the field to better the score. With the Indians struggling to find pitching to close the game, they took the field. The Cardinals whittled away at the gap until their lower part of the order was up with 2 out. A gap hit over 2nd base sent in the winning run to close the deal.
The Indians do not look like the team they can be and with injuries and missing players, they will continue to suffer heartache losses such as this. The Cardinals younger players and available bench may prove to make the difference. The series should be interesting.

September 19th, 2006 - Hobos take game 2 with certainty, racking up a total of 31 runs in two games against the Yanks...
The Hobos and Yankees squared off tonight for Game #2 of the Vintage final series. The men in black were pumped and ready to pounce on their competition again with one win in their series under their belt. The Hobos showed the strength in their bats again by putting runs on the board. Despite a short bench, the Yankees made attempts to match up the score, including back to back home runs by Jamie McIntyre and Larry Hallett in the second inning. The Hobos, with a close to flawless defense, were able to keep the Yanks at an arms length at any time. With the score close at 9-8, the Hobos were able to work both sides of the field by putting 4 more runs on the board to widen the gap and prevent the Yanks from making any further progress on their last attempts at bat. With a score of 13-8, the Hobos took the second game.

September 17th, 2006 - Indians push out a defensive win to take series against X-Men, Cardinals bump Cubs from the running and Hobos crush Yankees in a slug-fest for Game 1 of the Vintage Finals...
Well folks, it was an interesting night for BVB baseball. Winners and losers all around with the final series on their way.
The Cubs and Cardinals took the field for their final Game 5 of the series. The score remained tight until the bottom of the 3rd inning when the Cardinals pushed open the flood gates and put up 6 runs on the board. The Cubs made attempts to reciprocate, including a home run by Steve Michenko and three defensive innings to hold of the red birds, but they could not take the lead. The Cardinals, scoreless since their last 6 run inning, took another one in the 6th. With the score 13-2 for the Cards, the long standing BVB Cubs were on the ropes and felt the final blow was going to come quick. They took their last swings at the plate. A valiant effort by scoring 2 runs but, it was defiantly not enough to catch up. The Cardinals took the game at 13-4. The Cubs were sent packing for the season. This is the first time the Cardinals are heading to the finals in their two years of existence in BVB. A great season thus far and a chance to take it all for this rookie team.
The X-Men faced the Indians in their Game 5 final for the series. In the same fashion from previous games, the X-Men took a first inning lead but, the Indians were in a different frame of mind. With their backs against the wall after being down 2-1 in the series, the Indians bounced back last game and followed suit with this one. Right from the start, they directed the game. Pitching was weakened from the series dragging out but, they did their job. The Indians defense took a few nose dives but, were able to recover quickly or were off-set by X-Men errors. The Indians hitting had a number of spikes. Joe Stephens(#19) hit his second home run of the series. Dan Pokoradi(#41) had two opposite field line shots with RBIs in tow. The hitting was contagious for the team. With the X-Men pushing at the rear to match the score, the Indians took the game with a centerfield catch at a score of 8-6. The Indians now move on to the Legends finals against the Cardinals. Both teams have not gone this far in their existence in BVB so the nerves will be tense and the action should be great.
The Vintage division finals kicked off Game 1 tonight as well with the Hobos facing the Yankees. The Yanks are the top seeded team from regular season but, they did not show their stuff for this game. The Hobos took a 6 run first inning at bat. The Yanks made attempts to battle back with 2 runs on the board but, they were shut out for the next three innings. The Hobos continued their slugfest by putting runs on the scoreboard. They included a home run by Craig Frolick(#25) and a grand slam bomb by Colin Lalonde(#33). With the score at 18-3 at the bottom of the 6th, the BVB mercy rule came into effect. The Hobos took the first game of the series. A definite mental loss for the Yankees that could do harm to the pace of the series.
With the Indians and Cardinals off to the finals on Wednesday and the Hobos/Yanks taking the field for Game 2 of the Vintage finals, we are bound to see some good baseball. Make sure you come out to watch the games.

September 15th, 2006 - Indians pick it up to fight another day and Cubs squeeze a win to take on weary Cardinals for a set of Legends division semi-finals on Sunday...
Well folks, the Legends division play-offs has transpired to be a series. Both sets are heading to Game 5 on Sunday.
The Indians and X-Men squared off for game 4 at Nelson. In the same fashion as previous series games, the X-Men jumped out in front early in the game. With Indians pitcher, Jason Saker(#31), nursing an injury with subdued defense behind him, the X-Men took 3 runs in the first inning. The difference this time was a good recovery bounce in the Indian's step forward. With the score 3-1 and the X-Men ahead, Indians #19, Joe Stephens, stepped up to smack a 3 run homer past the fence. The hit seemed to rally the squad into a team. Although weak at times, Indians hitting moved runs around with the help of some untimely X-Men errors. Indians pitching was also on the mark with McKay(#7), Stephens(#19) and Thomson(#24) only allowing 1 run in the 6 innings. The game ended with an X-Men strike-out at the plate with a score of 10-4. The Indians and X-Men move on to Game #5 on Sunday at Millcroft 'C'.
The Cardinals and Cubs hit the field for their series game #4. It was do or die for the Cubs tonight if they wanted to advance in the series and they seemed to have the correct mind set. The Cubs took 5 runs the first inning, quickly recovering from the 3 that the Cards gained first. The Cardinals quickly battled back to even out the score in the following inning. Included in the game were home runs hit by Cardinals Hector Padilla(#10) and Jeff Gilleland (#88), his second of the series. A strong defensive ball game continued by both teams through the remaining innings creating a classic tight playoff game situation. With the Cubs up by one in the 6th inning, the Cardinals were held off in the final at bat to close the game at 8-7 for the Cubs. The teams now head to Game #5 on Sunday at Millcroft 'B'
The Vintage division finals are scheduled to kick off Sunday night at Nelson at 7pm. The Hobos and Yankees will give BVB fans a good set of games over the series. Make sure you come out to watch a game.

September 13th, 2006 - X-Men/Indians get bumped due to wet fields...Vintage finals schedule bumped up to accommodate weather.
The Indians vs. X-Men game #4 scheduled for this evening has been scrubbed for the time being due to weather conditions. The heavy rain over the last day and more still to come have made the fields unplayable. Keep an eye on the schedule for schedule updates as they are posted.
BVB players and fans....be aware that the Vintage Division Finals Game #1 has been scheduled for Sunday Sept 17th at Nelson where the Hobos/Yankees square off for the BVB title.
Keep an eye on the schedule for other possible changes due to weather. It is an unfortunate part of Canadian baseball.

September 12th, 2006 - Cards and Cubs get a breather in the play-off round...
Well, mother nature did not cooperate with the play-offs. It seems to be common place for BVB to deal with rain-outs this year. What is another one for the books. The Cubs/Cardinals Game #4 has been cancelled and rescheduled to the time slot previously listed for Game #5 on Friday September 15th, 7PM at Millcroft. The teams will assume their home/away status for Game #4. With the Cards 2-1, the Cubs need to pick up the pace and take one back or they will be sent packing.
Keep an eye on the schedule. Game #4 for the Indians/X-Men series is in jeopardy as well due to predicted weather reports. A new time may have to be taken for Friday night in order to allow for a complete schedule before the finals.

September 10th, 2006 - Red Sox and Pirates are sent packing, Indians are put on the ropes and Cardinals have turned the tables on the Cubs...
Well folks, the series are half done. The final series for the Vintage division has been decided and the Legends series are all but one game away from it all.
In the early Nelson park Red Sox vs. Hobos game, the score was gapped by only one run going into the 4th inning. The Hobos then opened up on the Sox, taking runs when possible. The Sox could not hold them off due to strong hitting and multiple errors (game total of 5). With a 6 run inning by the Hobos in the 6th innings, the Red Sox looked to the inevitable. Not scoring since the 3rd inning, the Red Sox could only squeeze another 2 at their last at bats. The Hobos took the game with a 13-6 decision, taking the series with a sweeping 3-0 over the Sox.
In the early game on Friday at Millcroft, the X-Men/Indians series seemed to be all but over. The X-Men took a strong first inning offensive, as they have for games past in the series. The Indians pitching started weak with Derrick Baznick struggling on the hill but, returning pitcher, Joe Stephens, and lefty, Jason Saker, worked batters to clear the first four innings. At times, the Indians showed signs of a solid ball team but, errors, missed opportunities and light bats let the X-Men drive forward. The X-Men took an 11-8 decision, putting the in the lead of the series at 2-1. The next game will mean the Indians must push as hard as they can in order to complete or win a series. The Indians were the favorite for this series but, the spirit and drive is gone from the squad, deflating any chances unless they can take advantage of the X-Men tired bench as they go to the next game.
The Pirates faced the Yankees for game three of the series. The Pirates were behind by two and knew it would be difficult to climb out of the hole they were in. The Yankees took advantage of the stressed mental situation that the Pirates were under. They pushed the Pirates to the edge and sealed their fate, taking the game at a score of 8-2. The Pirates were sent packing by the Yankees with a 3-0 sweep. The Yanks now move on to face the Hobos in the Vintage division finals.
The Cubs and Cardinals took the field at the late Millcroft game. The Cardinals, an underdog favorite for a number of BVB fans, pushed hard to make a statement with the Cubs. The Cards offensive bats, including a first inning 6 spot, highlighted by 3 hits and 4 RBI's from Alexis "Pineapple" Pietraroia, pushed the score to a favorable spread. Despite efforts like a solo home run by Ryan Phillips (#23), his second of the series, the Cubs were not able to catch their breath. The Cards took their second win of the series at a score of 6-11. This win has turned the tides on the betting percentages for the series, putting the Cards out in front. If they continue their drive, the could send the Cubs home early.
The play-off series continues on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. The Indians and Cubs need to pick themselves up off the dirt in order to squeeze another win. Red Sox and Pirates are on the ropes and need to pick up a win to fight another day.
Stay posted for the schedule for the final series. Due to timely finishes of the Vintage Division semi-finals, game #1 may be moved up in order to accommodate approaching Fall weather conditions. Keep an eye on the schedule.

September 8th, 2006 - Indians squeeze a win, Cardinals battle back to make a series, both Red Sox and Pirates lose heart-breaking second game to put them in a tough situation for the series..
Well folks, the BVB play-off season seems to be running on a few flat tires. The game action does not seem to be as tights as one would hope.
In the early Nelson park Red Sox vs. Hobos game, the game play was tight, with the game tied at 3 going into the 5th inning. The Hobos took a large 3 run jump in the bottom of the 5th but, the Red Sox spelled off the lead with matching runs over the next two innings. Red Sox #37, Darcy Osipenko, was tossed due to an on-field incident with a throwback to a Hobo base runner at 3rd. The situation put a damper on the team drive. With the score tied and the bases loaded in the final inning, the Red Sox walked in a winning Hobo run. The final score was 7-6 for the Hobos, taking them to 2-0 in the series.
In the early game on Friday at Millcroft, the X-Men/Indians series continued. The X-Men came out of the gate with 5 runs on the board by the first inning. The Indians hitting was flat, a troubling factor all year that does not allow them to recover quickly from pitching weakness. The Tribe was being cut off from closing the gap so they had to hold the X-Men from the hill. Indians #24 Paul Thomson, was put in to hold back scoring efforts on the 6th inning with bases loaded. Thomson pitched a solid chess match against every X-Men batter, keeping them from scoring runs. The Indians bats finally came alive towards the end of the game, including a winning RBI single by Jason Saker in the final inning to take the score to a 10-9 decision in favor of the tribe. The series is now at 1-1 with the Indians and X-Men.
The Pirates faced the Yankees for game two of the series. The Pirates were behind by one and wanted to prove their worth on the field. Unfortunately, the Yankees bats fired multiple hits into the field, including a two run home run by Dean Howard and a grand slam by Jason Riesberry, taking the 4th inning to 9 runs. The Pirates spirit did not recover after watching the two bombs land over the fence. The Yankees walked through the win with a score of 14-4.
The Cubs and Cardinals squared off at the late Millcroft game. The Cardinals came out quickly to take an 8 run lead by the end of the 3rd inning which included a bomb by Jeff Gilleland (#88). The Cubs attempted to creep back up on the board with single runs scored through the final 3 innings including a home run by Ryan Phillips (#23) but, it was not enough to even up the game. The Cardinals took their first series win with a score of 11-6, putting the series at 1 a piece.
The play-off series continues on Sunday as the teams fight to stay alive or win it quickly. The Red Sox and Pirates are on the ropes and need to pick up a win to fight another day. It should be interesting to watch.

September 6th, 2006 - X-Men squash faltering Indians...Hobos take a tight first game win away from Red Sox...
The BVB X-Men faced the Indians for the first game of their Legends series tonight. The X-Men had a record of 1-2 for the season with the Indians for regular season play so they were not the automatic favorites for the play-off series but, they definitely disregarded that line of thinking. The X-Men hit the ball hard offensively and the Indians could not keep a pace going due to multiple errors; 12 in total for the game. The Indians displayed a weak sense of game play, making mistakes like a bunch of "beer starved soft-ballers." The X-Men continued their scoring efforts with every inning that passed including a 10 run last inning. The X-Men took the first game with a lazy 20-7 score, looking more like a football boxscore instead of the sport intended.
The Red Sox played the Hobos for their first game of the series. The Hobos came out of the start blocks strong with back to back 3 run innings. The Red Sox attempted to gain ground with two runs in the second inning but, were shut down for the next three innings. Despite efforts to widen the gap, the Hobos only scored one further run in the 4th inning. The Red Sox closed the gap with another 3 runs in the 6th inning but, the could not complete the rally. The Hobos took game #1 with a 7-5 decision. Red Sox, Darren Zinck and Joe Davis both registered home runs for the play-off game.
With one game per series completed, the division play-off favorites have advanced 1-0. There are some signs of late play-off "underdog" team surging ahead to take the series but, only time will tell. This sports writer's prediction cards are being held close to my chest for the percentages could be close when involving both fan favorites and the true science or skill of the game. The next set of games are this coming Friday night. I am sure the action will pick up as teams fight to take the turning point game #2 in the best of 5 series.

September 5th, 2006 - THE PLAY-OFF RACE HAS BEGUN...Yanks push away Pirates with last inning drive, Cubs stun the Cards with a large first game winning score...
The BVB play-offs have begun sports fans. The Pirates faced the Yankees at the Nelson game for their first of a best of 5 series tonight. The Yankees hit the Pirates strong in the first inning, giving them a 6 run lead after their first at bat. The Pirates did not let that take them the rest of the way down. They took every opportunity to put men on base and score with multiple Yankee fielding errors. Unfortunately, a few potential scoring runners were lost to Pirate base running errors. The score gap was a 7-2 lead for the Yanks as the Pirates went up for their last at bats. The Bucs took in another 3 runs to close in on the Yanks. With two men on and the leading run at the plate, a fly ball to right field sealed their fate. The Yankees took the game at 7-5. The Pirates/Yankees play again on Friday night at 8:30pm at Nelson for game #2.
The Cubs hit the field with the Cardinals at Millcroft for their first game of the play-off series. The two teams battled out the first four innings with a tight/low scoring game. Only 1 run separated them at any given time. The Cardinals were hoping to open the flood gates in the 5th inning by putting more runs on the score board but, the Cubs reciprocated in the 6th inning, keeping them ahead by 1 run. With their final at bat, the Cubs showed the strength that has been displayed in many past play-off series. They hit around 9 further runs, leaving the Cardinals stunned. The Red Birds made attempts to recoup their loss but, could not bring a runner home. The Cubs won game #1 at 18-8.
The Hobos/Red Sox and Indians/X-Men game series kick off Wednesday night at Nelson and Millcroft respectively. With the two matches consisting of the "middle of the pack" from each division, the games should prove to be entertaining. Be sure to come out and watch a game.

September 1st, 2006 - X-Men keep their 7th spot going into the play-offs with a large win against the Cubs...
The Cubs faced the X-Men in the final regular season game for 2006. The match-up was a deciding factor for the two teams to finish out in 7th or 8th spot in the standings. The Cubs battled the X-Men for the first few innings, keeping the score tight but, a later half inning with multiple errors let the X-Men slip by with runs in hand. The X-Men continued their gap scoring by building a lead that Cubs could not recover from. The final score ended at 17-8 for the men in Black. The win lets the X-Men stay in 7th spot to face the Indians in the first round. The Cubs, in last spot, will face the Cardinals in the play-offs.
With the team seeding and schedule set, the race for the play-offs has begun. This sports writer is hoping that there will be great action on the field this year. Keep an eye on the score board for game updates. See you at the yard baseball fans...

August 31st, 2006 - Pirates take final win to finish the season...all but one game to complete the standings.
The BVB Cardinals played the Pirates for the second time this week to make up for an early season rain-out game. The Pirates made quick work of putting points on the score board. The Cardinals made attempts in the early innings to gain back ground but, the Pirates kept them at an arm's length. The Pirates, Darryl Aylward, was the game MVP with a home run hit in the 4th inning and only allowing the Cards to score 1 run in the three innings he was on the mound.
With all but the last two positions (7th/8th) confirmed in the standings, the League has cancelled the Sept. 1st game match-ups of the Yanks Vs. Hobos, Pirates vs. Red Sox and the Cardinals vs. Indians because of the long weekend. The games were scheduled on the date due to reduced park availability and the number of make-up games that were dealt in the season. The extra day's break will give teams a chance to rest before next week's play-off start.
The Cubs vs. X-Men is still a go Friday night for the outcome will determine where those two teams fall in the bottom two slots of the standings. It should prove to be a good game as the teams fight to see who they will play. The Cardinals and Indians will be waiting for the outcome to begin strategic planning for their games next week.
It has been an exciting regular season folks but, it is not over! Keep an eye on the schedule page for playoff match ups. See you at the yard baseball fans...

August 29th, 2006 - Yankees take the top spot and Cardinals take their first divisional with wins, sealing all but the two bottom spots in the standings..
The BVB Yankees squared off against the Hobos in the early Millcroft game tonight. A well pitched and played game for both teams but, the Yankees early lead in the 2nd and 3rd inning kept the Hobos from making ground. The Yanks won with a score of 6-2 and clinch first place in the League.
The Cardinals faced the Pirates in the late game. The Cards took an early lead and continued for a few innings, consistently keeping the Pirates away from home plate. Timely defense kept the Cards lead throughout the game. Offence hitting led by 2 hits and 3 RBI's from Jay Hodgson and an a bases clearing triple from Dave Kerr kept the Pirates pushing for a win. In the bottom of the 7th, with the score at 9-7, two out and two men on base, the Pirates hitter (call-up #41 Pokoradi) could not close the deal, popping up to shallow right field to finish the game. The 9-7 win for the Cards completed a clinching divisional win; their first ever in the two years of their existence.
The race to the playoffs is now complete with possibly only one more regular season game remaining this Thursday night. Due to city scheduling issues, the League is considering canceling the final set of games on Friday Sept. 1st due to team feedback and low attendance. Keep an eye on the schedule page for playoff match ups. See you at the yard baseball fans...

August 27th, 2006 - X-Men take a tumble at game time and Yankees continue their win streak to keep the lead...
The BVB X-Men were slated to play the Pirates tonight but, due to lack of player attendance, the men in black gave away an easy win to the Pirates by forfeiting due to not having enough players in attendance. The Pirates take a 7-0 win in the standings. The tight regular season rainout make-up game schedule is busy for teams but, is a necessary measure to complete the games before the play-offs.
The Cubs faced the Yankees in the late Millcroft game tonight. The Cubs held on to a tight game in the first few innings but, fell apart in the fourth inning with back to back 6spot innings, giving the Yanks a comfortable lead. The Yankees finished off the Cubs in the 6th inning with a 14-5 win. This gives the Yankees a full game lead over the Hobos in the standings as they both have two games left in the season.
The next few games should prove to be exciting. The Hobos and Yankees face off Tuesday and Friday this week. The outcome of the games will prove to be a deciding factor in how they place for the play-offs. The Pirates are matched up with the Cardinals this week on Tuesday and Thursday. The Cardinals need to win one of theses games in order to keep their 5th spot over the Indians for they are playing head to head with them on Friday. Keep your eye on the score board folks, the run to the play-offs is in the final strokes and the top two teams in the Vintage and Legends divisions are fighting to take the top seed. August 23rd, 2006 - One of BVB's own takes a road trip to help others in need in New Orleans...
Just as a side note, to tell you how strong this league and it's members are in presence and values; one of BVB's own, Colin Lalonde(Hobos #33), is heading to New Orleans, Louisiana USA as part of a Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) group effort to provide ongoing relief efforts. They will be involved with some housing rebuild projects for people that require assistance. It is hard to believe that it will be a year on Aug. 29th since hurricane Katrina hit the shores of the US Gulf Coast but, recovery and rebuilding is still going on. Assistance and help will continue to be required for a long time until things are somewhat back to normal.
New Orleans is still in "intensive care." If you have seen recent television footage of New Orleans, you probably have a picture of how bad things still are. Areas are still without proper housing, water, electricity, healthcare, police/security or other institutions we take for granted. They remain in serious trouble still today despite the mass amounts of humanitarian efforts that have headed South to their aid. Being that the assistance has been such an involved effort, waves of relief organizations go down in shifts to keep the "rebuild machine" working around the clock until an end is near.
We wish Colin and his counterparts from the CAW all the best and a safe return as they lend a hand. It may seem short in term (one week) but, it contributes to the combined efforts that anyone could only hope for in return if they were in dire straits.
Folks, this is not a light undertaking for the faint of heart. Not to scare anyone but, despite the utility and housing issues that organizations are trying rectify, it is still a dangerous place. In July 2006, New Orleans lost almost as many people to murder as in July of 2005, with only 40 percent of the population back in town. A staggering fact of life for a region that is part of modern day society. Your efforts are respected but, be careful out there guys and come home safe.
Colin will be returning with some pictures and information updates about his trip to New Orleans and we will be sure to share those with you.

August 22nd, 2006 - Yanks take the lead with an earned win and a Hobo loss to the Red Sox...
In the early Millcroft game, the Yanks took on the Pirates. The game started out tight but, due to some untimely errors, the Yankees began to take the lead. Solid hitting for both teams kept the score high but, the Yanks took the upper hand in the late innings to a final score of 11-7. The win, in combination with the Hobos preceded game, pushes the Yanks to the top spot in the standing. With three more games slated in the season, two being against their 2nd place rivals (Hobos), the next few games should be exciting.
The Hobos played the Red Sox at the late Millcroft game tonight. The Hobos took the upper hand early in the game but, the Red Sox continued to push through with single score innings to close the gap. Despite a number of errors by the Red Sox, the Hobos could not fend of the advance by widening the score. The Hobos came up short on the bats in the final 4 innings allowing the Sox to advance on a 3 run 6th inning, sealing their fate to the men in white. The Sox took the game at 6-4.
See you out at the Yard on Sunday night as BVB teams hit the field to finish off the regular season with rain-out make-up games over the next two weeks. August 21st, 2006 - A word from our President..
Re: #8 Andrew Stafford - Board Member, Player and League Friend..
On behalf of BVB I would like to offer our sincerest thanks and best wishes to Andrew Stafford (#8 Red Sox). Andrew has been a big part of BVB as both a player and currently a Board member in the last two years. He is an original BVB member and played a number of years in the Lakeshore loop as well. He has accepted a fabulous offer to spend at least the next 6 months working at a resort in the Dominican Republic so baseball has to take a pause while he pursues a career dream. Please make inquiries to the League if you are planning a vacation trip down to the DR and we will find him for you. As much as we wish him the best of luck, personally I hope he gets home sick and we see him soon again in his #8 Red Sox Jersey .

Have a great time “Staff”…. you know you will be missed and I know we will be likewise.
Thanks again and see you on the field.

August 20th, 2006 - The Thrill of Victory ... The agony of The Feet ! ...The BVB Grey 49ers come close to taking the Ontario 44+ Provincials this past weekend.

Once again the Burlington Grey 49ers hit the field…and I mean hit it. Due to there old friend Mother Nature the Grey's, fresh off a Saturday 1 inning rain out, were forced to play at 10:30 ... 12:30 and 2:30 on Sunday in attempts to take the Provincial Crown.
With a fresh squad in Game 1, the Grey's wore down the Hamilton Steelers with a strong pitching performance by Leo “Kid” King, Carmen Gassi and closer Scott Bailey and took away a 7-2 decision.
Game 2 saw the Grey's facing there old Nemeses the Oakville Golden A's. After a tightly played 4 innings, the Goldie's were up 2 - 0 when Carmen Gassi exploded on a 2 strike pitch to double. Pinch runner Brad “Gunner” Scott took his running spot and scored on a Billy Dechaine single. To follow, pinch runner Mike Pingle swiped his way around and scored the tying run on a Jim Harrow clutch full count base rap off Oakville ’s closer Bernie Arbour. The Goldies picked up a single run in the top of the 6th. The excitement continued as, with 2 on the bags in the bottom of the 6 th, the BVB Grey's Scott Bailey reached out and touched someone when the Oakville pitcher left one over the plate on an intentional walk gone bad; thus driving in Brad Scott for the tie. To follow, Miles Fleming ripped the next pitch for a gap shot to “seal the deal”, making the final Grey's 4 - Oakville 3. (Pitchers Leo King , Norm Watts, (W) Scott Bailey)
Game 3 at 2:30pm the same day had the BVB Grey's versus our old friends from Welland , the Legends. Four hours later we are ready to play in the final game. Slowly, the creaky bodies seemed to rear there heads as the Grey's committed 4 errors in the 1st but only gave up 2 runs.
The game was tight at 3-2 in the 4th when a controversial home-run left the yard and seemed to take the wind out of the 49ers sails. In the next inning, the local Grey's watched it slip away as the Legends trotted 4 more across and put the game away. The 49ers loaded the bases and did not surrender easily but only potted 2 runs to finish at an 8 -4 decision for the other team.
Congratulations to the Welland Legends for there victory and another BIG THANKS to the boy's in Grey for there commitment to the BVB travel program. We are a great league and even the old guys proved their stamina and commitment in respect to BVB!

August 20th, 2006 - Yanks/Pirates battle it out, Cards take another point in the lead, Hobos and Sox play tight ball and X-Men all but seal the Indians fate in the standings.
In the early Nelson game, the Yanks took on the Pirates. A quick and close game was played by the teams. The Pirates made every attempt to battle out a lead in the later half of the game but, the Yanks held on to their scoring offensive that included two home runs (Ranney & Veldhoen). The final score was 6-4 for the Yanks. The win pushes the Yanks even closer to the 1st place Hobos. With one more game in hand, they may have the advantage.
The Cubs battled the Cardinals at the Early Ireland game. The Cardinals took an early 6 run lead in the first inning and never looked back. With solid pitching by 4 Cardinals on the mound and timely defense highlighted by center fielder Dave Kerr, they held onto the lead until a 9-4 win. The win elevates the Cardinals a full game ahead of the 6th place Indians. Depending on the next three games, the Cardinals have a good chance to take the division this year.
The X-Men hit the field with the Indians at the late Nelson game. With high scores clocked in by both teams the score gap bounced around a few times. The Indians sealed their fate in the 4th inning by letting a 6 run score lead be taken by the X-Men. Indians coaching made a number of adjustments to try to keep things going but, it was not in the cards that night. The X-Men took the game at 13-10.
The Hobos played the Red Sox at the late Ireland game tonight. With a scoreless game in the first two, the Hobos finally jumped ahead with 2 runs in the 3rd and 1 run in the 4th. The Red Sox were starved offensively for the first 5 innings with strong defensive play by the Hobos. The Sox finally scored 2 runs by the 6th, leaving them only 2 runs behind. They could not catch up completely in the 7th with only 1 run scored. The Hobos took the game with a close score of 4-3.
See you out at the Yard on Tuesday night as BVB teams hit the field to finish off the regular season with rain-out make-up games over the next two weeks. The final 11 games should prove to be interesting. Some teams have sealed their fate in the standings but, there is still a number of possible scenarios left depending on how the wins and losses play out. Later baseball fans...

August 15th, 2006 - Indians get skunked by Yankees, Pirates battle a short bench win over Cubs...
The Yankees played the Indians in the early Millcroft game tonight. The Indians lack of hitting and short bullpen served up an easy win for the Yankees. The Yanks pitchers, Alan Rutherford, Brad Tupper and Jamie MacIntyre combined took a two hit shutout to a 18-0 win. The recent loss for the Indians have dropped them from the 5th to 6th spot; a position they have held strong from the beginning of the season. The Indians staff have failed to notice the importance of some high percentage wins needed to keep the 5th spot for play-off seeding. This may prove to be the decision point for the Indians; pushing them into an early winter layoff in the first play-off round.
The Pirates faced the Cubs for the late game. With a high number of hits, the two teams kept pace through the innings despite the short bench situation the Pirates coaching staff juggled. Call-up, Robin Barkhouse(Indians), proved his worth with two double RBI clutch hits to keep the Pirates in the game. The Bucs took the game with a final of 12-11. The Pirates have a lock on the 4th spot in the regular season standings but, further wins in their next 6 games will prove to be deciding factors for other team standings; positive or negative. Baseball is all about statistics sports fans and one team's win or loss may not mean a lot to their overall individual outcome but can mean everything to another. That is what makes this game so good to watch!

August 13th, 2006 - Pirates take the Hobos, Red Sox heavy hitting still not enough, Cards move up quickly in standings and Indians get trampled by Cubs...
The Hobos hit the field against the Pirates tonight at the early Nelson game. The Bucs showed signs of life by racking up runs to match every Hobo scoring effort right up until the last inning. The Pirates took the win, their second against the Hobos this year, at a 13-12 decision. The Cardinals were matched with the X-Men in the early Ireland game. Good pitching by Kent Barber, Hector Padilla and 2 shut out innings by pitcher Rob Whitteker sealed the X-Men's fate with a 12-5 decision for the red birds. This is a two game winning streak for the Cardinals, moving them up to the 6th spot in the standings.
The Red Sox battled the Yankees in the late Nelson game. Despite three home runs by the Sox (Davis, McKenna, Osipenko) the Yankees could not be held back. The Yanks took the game with a score of 10-7. The Indians faced the Cubs in the late Ireland game. The Indians took an early 3 run lead in the first half inning but, it was quickly taken back by the Cubs due to multiple errors and selective hitting. The Indians got trampled by the Cubbies with a score of 19-5.

August 11th, 2006 - BVB teams back at it after Nats break. Cards take a big win while top four keep their standings leads...
BVB games kicked off Friday night with the Hobos facing the Indians. Despite an early lead that the Indians took, the Hobos bounced back and continued to rack runs until the finish for their 16th win of the season; just shy of .900 record. The Red Sox took on the Cubs at the Nelson early game. A high scoring game for both sides (16-13 decision), the Red Sox continued to keep their winning streak and keeping the Cubs at last place in the standings.
The Pirates battled the X-Men for another win at the late Nelson game with the Bucs, widening the gap with the approaching Indians for the 4th spot in the standings. The big story for the night was the late Yankees/Cardinals game at Ireland. The Cardinals came out of the gate with three high scoring innings and they held their lead despite consist ant attempts by the Yanks to take back ground. The final score ended with a nail biting 12-11 decision for the Cards. The loss pushes the Yanks another half game back behind the leading Hobos.
See you out at the Yard on Sunday night as the teams square off in battle again. The race for the playoff positions is fierce and should prove to be entertaining as the last few spots are solidified over the next two weeks. Later baseball fans...

August 10th, 2006 - A word from our President.
Re: 2006 Canadian Nationals. Burlington 49ers Come home ranked 4th and 5th in the Nation
The Tour is over and the BVB 49ers return as winners. No, I did not say Champions but winners in the eyes of Burlington Vintage Baseball.
Both the Black and Grey squads battled hard and represented BVB as top contenders in the 2006 Canadian Nationals tournament. The future of BVB is extremely bright as we continue to produce solid baseball players at the Vintage level.
The Black 49ers (35) team chased hard after a National Title advancing to the final 4. They then ran straight into the 2 time defending Champions from Tillsonburg. After a couple of unfortunate breaks the Blacks fell 7-1. What was learned however will not be soon forgotten. The opportunity to take on the defending Champions should always be considered an honor as there is no better measuring stick to gauge your status. Over the course of the Tournament the Blacks were 3 – 2, that included an exciting gritty win in the quarter finals. Overall the team displayed a tremendous amount of character and certainly had the Town of Yarmouth talking. At the conclusion, the BVB Black 49ers comes home as the #4 ranked team in the Nation. Congratulations squad, you deserve recognition for your accomplishments.
The Grey 49ers (44+) team also showed up to play. Having little time to bond as a team they made up for it in short order. Mother Nature put an early crimp into there plans as the rains fell early and forced the Grey’s to complete there round-robin portion of the schedule mere hours before there quarter final match up with the eventual champions from Barrie. After the completion of there 8am round-robin game ( note. 8am Yarmouth time 7am on our body clocks) The Grey’s advanced to the tier 1 pool and played Barrie in the quarter finals. After holding the lead from the first pitch the Grey’s could not close the door and Barrie rallied in the last inning to advance. The Grey’s finished the tournament 2 – 2 and carry the #5 National Ranking .
Some notes worth mention. The Grey’s made an emergency addition to there line up to solidify the 12 man batting order that is a requirement to plate. Upon losing a player, the squad turned to 73 year old Doug Reid (Coach) and asked him if he would consider holding down a number of plate appearances going forward. After a short pause and twinkle in his eye he informed me his last at bat competitively was 1953; not even recognizing the need to wear a helmet to bat. Fast forward 3 games later and Doug can retire all over again with his 3–5 hitting and 2 RBI status including a base smash in the Qtr. Final game that landed in Ctr. Field. This final plate appearance was followed by an announcement to recognize his achievement and age, followed by a standing ovation by the crowd.
The Burlington Blacks carried 15 players on their bench while the Greys only had 12. This is a far cry from the 18 plus deep squads that most other teams brought to the field. It is a great sign of the stamina and commitment that Burlington brought to the tournament despite the weariness of game play over the 4 days. Some lessons were learned this weekend that will only help to improve our future strength on the ball field.
With Burlington being part of a 36 team tournament competing for the national crown (20 x 35s & 16 x 44s), BVB represented and displayed great game play within in the mix of teams. Despite the disappointment of not taking home a final win, both BVB squads sparked up conversation immediately after about their outlook to the 2007 Nationals in Red Deer Alberta next year. A true sign of strong competitiveness and spirit within the team(s). The weekend tournament and activities have solidified BVB’s place within the Nationals and formed lasting friendships and camaraderie with their players within the league.
On behalf of BVB, we would like to thank the 2006 Yarmouth Nationals committee for providing a great tournament and atmosphere that welcomed all teams and players for the event. A great display of Canadian Vintage baseball and how much the game means to all of us.
Finally, a tremendous thank you is in order for all those who committed there time and dedication towards this BVB effort. I will not name names as the efforts of each and everyone who supported this venture was vital towards our results. We all know who contributed what. I hope everyone enjoyed their time and made some new friends along the way. I know I did, seeing first hand how Burlington can represent play on and off the field. We can now look forward to getting back on our home fields and look forward to more baseball with the final regular season stretch run, the playoffs and possibly more tournament action.
Thanks again and see you on the field.

August 7th, 2006 2:00PM - BVB Black 49ers finish the Nationals on a high note despite a hard loss against Tillsonburg...
The Black 49ers hit the field this morning against the Tillsonburg OldSox (2004-5 champs) for the semi-final game at Veterans Field. With spirits high but, bodies weary after a hard weekend of game play, Burlington fought a tough battle against the crafty Tillsonburg team. Tillsonburg took an early runs lead but, Burlington fought hard to gain back ground. Unfortunately, the bats went silent at the wrong time, stranding men on base a number of times. Tillsonburg continued to hit strategically, slowly widening the gap on the score board. Burlington could not catch their breath, missing defensive plays and not hitting the gaps required to drive in runs. Tillsonburg took the game in the 7th inning with a final score off 7-1, knocking the Blacks out of the run for the finals.
A great display of courage, team play and Burlington pride, the 49ers played great games in this years Nationals. It is a definite sign of what BVB is all about and what is in the future for the squad as they look to take a win in future tournaments. All the players, coaches and support staff did an awesome job representing Burlington this year and it can only get better as they look to build strategies for next year.
This BVB sports writer had a blast at the games, watching the best game in the world being played as it should be. All teams played great baseball in a form that anyone watching would be proud of. BVB would like to thank our Yarmouth brothers for hosting a great tournament weekend that is a shinning example of Canadian Vintage baseball.
See you at the yard back in Burlington as BVB teams get back to business and make the run for the 2006 playoffs.

August 5th, 2006 7:00PM - BVB Black 49ers take their first loss, Greys go 1-1 for first two matches...
The Black 49ers took on the 2003 35+ National Champions from Aigle de Tracadie and were slowed down by the lack of hits as the Blacks tasted defeat for the first time falling 6 - 2 to the team from New Brunswick. The loss dropped the Black 49ers to 2 and 1 and they now wait to find out when their quarter final game is scheduled. Looks like the team will play sometime Sunday morning.
The Grey 49ers split their day as they lost their first game to Spring Lake Alberta by a score of 4 - 2 and then stomped Great Village in the afternoon game by a score of 12 - 0. Selwyn Everts blasted a 3 run home run in a 6 run 3rd inning for the Grey 49ers... The 49ers next game is scheduled for 8am Sunday morning when they take on the Noel Road Blue Jays.

August 4th, 2006 8:00PM - BVB Black 49ers 2-0 thus far for the Nationals with solid play and displays of BVB might...
The BVB 49ers Blacks were lucky to fit the game in due to solid rain throughout the early afternoon but, it broke just before game time. The Blacks hit the field against the Noel Road Blue Jays. The Blue Jays come out with a 4 run lead in the first half of the inning but, the Blacks showed how the pace the game would continue with by taking back runs in the bottom of the inning with a 3 run homer from #1 Craig Carroll. The Blue Jays made attempts to gain ground taking another 2 runs in the second inning but, the Blacks kept scoring runs and defensively taking the air out of the Blue Jays' early balloon. The game was finally finished after a 10 run differential in the 5th inning (2nd showing) with a final score of 16-6 for the 49ers. Hitters Casey Cosgrove and Darcy Osipenko each contributed to 3 of the total 14 runs scored. The game ended in a 5th inning mercy with a final of 14-2 for the 49er Blacks. August 1st, 2006 - Sox take X-Men, Hobos slug Cardinals into lop sided win..
The BVB Red Sox faced the X-Men for the early Millcroft game tonight. The weather was the hottest it has been all season but, the boys battled through it. With a strong start, the Sox were up by 3 runs in the top of the third inning but, the X-Men took it in the bottom, squaring up the score. The Sox then took a 6 run inning in the 4th and sealed the X-Men's fate for the rest of the game. The final score was 13-9 for the Sox.
The first place Hobos took the field against the Cardinals in the late Millcroft game. With a 6 run first inning, the Hobos never looked back. The score differential continued to climb throughout the game until it was all over at a 22-5 win for the men in black. Another win for the Hobos helps keep them at the top of the standings, gaining another half point spread with the second place Yankees.
League game play is off for the next week until August 11th for a game break for the long weekend and to accommodate tournament play out in Yarmouth N.S. at the Nationals. July 28th, 2006 - City makes the call to postpone all BVB games due to relentless rain...
The City of Burlington called off all BVB games for Friday night due to field conditions. The "never ending" rains in the last week have saturated the ground and it can not take more at this time. The games will be rescheduled until later in the season.
With 11 games delayed due to weather/field conditions, the August BVB regular season schedule will be packed with game. Heading into the play-offs on the first week of September, this will produce some weary players and no chance for nagging injuries to heal without a break.

July 23rd, 2006 - Nelson Park a wash-out for the Cubs/Yanks & Cards/Pirates...Hobos retain their lead and the Indians take a win over the Sox...
With the weather questionable all day Sunday, it did not look like there were to be games played. BVB officials did eventually strike the early and late game at Nelson due to field conditions but, Ireland seemed to fair better after the long rainstorm. The X-Men faced the Hobos in the early game with a high scoring match at a 12-7 finish for the first place Hobos.
The Baseball Gods were caught napping in the late game where the Indians battled the Red Sox. The Indians took a 4 run lead in the first inning and held on as tight as possible throughout the rest of the game. The Sox came up short on their bats, leaving a total of 11 men on base. The Tribe cycled through pitching changes 5 times to obtain the effect needed and reduce the unwanted walks; a strategy that should be executed all the time. The Sox reached for the win with a one run deficit in the 6th inning and men on 2nd and 3rd but time ran out, sealing the deal for the Indians at a 4-3 win. The old football expression comes to mind for this sports writer as to what can happen on the field of battle.."any given Sunday boys....any given Sunday!"
On a seperate note, the BVB Nationals committee made their final grad prize draw at Ireland between games for the "Wheelbarrow full of Booze" in support for the 2006 BVB Nationals Squad(s). A number of the players were present with BVB Ops Exec. Walter Lutz selected the winning ticket. Congratulations to BVB's own Norm Greer for winning the prize. Also, many thanks to all supporters of this event as well as all the recent 2006 Nationals fund-raising efforts.

July 16th, 2006 - Night of the mercies and slugfests as the top four teams keep their spots...
It was a night of lopsided victories for BVB games this evening, with every battle ending in a large run differential. The Red Sox faced the Cardinals in the early game at Nelson. With two home runs hit by Mark Caron and Darcy Osipenko, the Sox drove in a total of 16 runs in 6 innings, taking the game at a 16-6 decision over the Cards. Final score was 13-5 for the Pirates.
The Hobos squared off against the Cubs in the late Nelson game. With multiple runs scored, including a home run by Casey Cosgrove and Colin Lalonde, the Hobos strolled to a 23-6 victory. July 11th, 2006 - Yanks and Hobos keep out on top with games against Cards and Indians...
The Cardinals faced the Yankees in the early game at Millcroft. Right from the start, the Yankees came out on top scoring 15 runs by the end of the third inning. The Cards made every attempt to battle back with three home runs hit by their squad during the course of the game. Unfortunately, the effort still had the Yanks take a 25-11 win. The Indians battled the Hobos in the late game. The Indians showed signs of defensive life in the beginning with spirits high but, the offensive bats suffered against the Hobos pitching. With the dawg days of summer, the Indians suffered a short bench again, displaying the bullpen rotation in the game. The Hobos took a win at 16-5.

Well, what can be said other than it was an ugly night in BVB with wide run spreads for the games being played. The Cubs took on the Indians and right from the start, they took a lead and never looked back. The Indians played a flat game and could not come up for air. The final score was 11-5 for the Cubs, elevating them to the 6th spot in the standings. The Yankees took on the Red Sox who seemed to suffer from the same ailment that the Tribe did. With multiple errors and silent bats, the Sox could not catch up to the Yanks as they relentlessly hit and run to a 20-1 win. The X-Men took on the Cardinals in the late Millcroft game. The men in black took a 9-2 decision, swapping places in the standings with the red birds. The Pirates took on the Hobos in the late Nelson game. With a 14 run lead in the 3rd inning, the Hobos pushed to seal a mercy. With another win for the Hobos, they swap positions with the Sox for 2nd in the standings.

July 7th, 2006 - Indians sink again, Cards take a solid win and Yanks blow out the Cubs...
In the early games tonight, the BVB Red Sox faced the Indians. A good game was played by both teams, with only 2 runs scored by the Red Sox by the fourth inning. Some lucky breaks and hits by the Indians in the bottom of the fourth opened the door to a 2 run lead. This was quickly squashed by the Red Sox in the fifth and sixth inning with 5 runs scored in each. The Indians never recovered after that. A game note worth mentioning...Arnie Leiferink, the Indians #44 and oldest member (53) hit a home run in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Pirates took on the Cardinals at the Nelson early game. With a solid batting throughout the game, the Cardinals ended the game to a 14-9 decision, pushing them up two spots in the standings overnight. The Yankees took on the Cubs in the late Nelson game. The Yanks kept the Cubs bats silent for most of the game but pushed hard with their own. Multiple hits and runs scored throughout the game, including Scott Ranney hitting his third consecutive home run in the same amount of games and a record 8 RBIs in the game. The Yanks ran with a 17-1 win in the end. The late millcroft game where the Hobos faced the X-Men did not have scores posted in time for this publication. The win and scores will be reported later.

June 23th, 2006 - Hobos grab the top, Indians squeeze a win, Yanks ride out a decision and Cubs show signs of life....
In the early games tonight, the BVB Hobos played the Red Sox for the second time in a row. The game was played tight with 10 hits on both sides but, only half of that scoring. With the Hobos trailing by 2 in the 7th inning, they sealed the deal with three runs in the final to bring a 6-5 decision for the 2005 Vintage Champs. This puts the Hobos to the top of the ranks, edging out the Red Sox who previously held that position for 6 weeks. The Indians were matched with the X-Men for the early game at Nelson. Defensive errors continue to plague the tribe but, offensive batting was able to make up for scores through the game. With a one run differential in the last inning with the X-Men battling to catch up, a play at the plate fender-bender closed the decision for the Indians. The Pirates played the Yankees at the Millcroft late game. With an 11-4 lead for the Yanks in the top of the fifth, the Pirates sealed their fate with an ejection that caused a game forfeit (9th man out). The Cardinals faced the Cubs again for the other back to back match-up at the late Nelson game. With the exception of a two run lead by the Cards in the second inning, the Cubs played a strong offensive game with runs scored to take a lead. The final decision was 11-4 for the Cubs. June 18th, 2006 - League standings stay static as the top half continue to win over the bottom half.....
In the early games tonight, the BVB Indians continue to fall further away from their eager season start by hitting a season high of 8 errors and only 5 hits. The Yanks showed hitting strength right out of the gate. The Yankees had well placed hits as well with Andy Szitas going 3 for 3 in the game along with other spray balls through the gaps by the rest of the squad. The Yanks pitching was also in fine form with returning alumni Allan Rutherford, who only allowed one hit and no runs in his two innings on the mound. Final score was 14-2 for the Yanks. The Hobos continued to dominate their game with another win over the Cardinals. A high scoring game for both sides that included four home runs (2 on each side) that created two different 7 point scoring innings; ending with a 17-10 decision for the Hobos. The Red Sox have held their top standing for the 6th game in a row with a 13-2 win over the bottom ranked X-Men that included two home runs by the Sox squad. The Pirates squared of against the Cubs in the other late game where the sounds of balls of the bats filled the air. With a high scoring game that included a grand slam by Craig Carroll (Pirates); his second for the year, the game ended with a 13-11 score for the Pirates.
The two approaching Tuesday match-ups with the Red Sox facing the Hobos and the Cardinals squaring off against the Cubs, should provide some movement in the standings. The action continues to gain momentum as the teams play more games. With 20 home runs registered in the league from only 24 games played, the caliber of baseball will only continue to rise. If teams are looking to keep up, they will have to maintain a competitive edge and play smart baseball in order to avoid an early winter break.

June 13th, 2006 - Indians fall on their own sword and Yanks push the X-Men down in the standings.....
The BVB Indians stumbled badly in the game against the Pirates Tuesday night with multiple errors and flat game play. The Pirates took quick advantage of the Indians pitching by hitting everything thrown at them; with 16 hits racked on the board. With flat defense and shallow offense on the bats, the Indians could not turn the tides, succumbing to a 14-5 loss; their weakest this season. The Yankees took on the X-Men in the late game with the grey bombers playing a sound offensive game by racking up 10 runs on 11 hits, all the while cutting off the X-Men's batting efforts with 7 hits and only 3 runs scored. The two Tuesday match-ups move the X-Men and Indians down another game in the standings while the Yankees hold their position and the Pirates move up a spot, replacing the Tribe. With the season almost a quarter of the way complete, the jockeying for standings position continues to heat up for the teams.

June 2nd, 2006 - Top three league leaders come up with wins while Cards/Pirates get struck out by lightning.
The top three teams in the standings continued to hold their positions by each scoring a win on Friday night. The Yankees battled the Cubs to take the game 13-5 with 4 Yanks racking up "fire stick" 2 RBIs each, while the Hobos continued their winning streak with their match against the X-Men. The Red Sox took the game against the Indians with the Tribe showing sings of old in the final inning by major errors committed to let go of the battle. The Cardinals and Pirates get to fight it out another night due to a lightning delay and cancellation at Millcroft for the late game.
BVB action is in full stride again with all teams going head to head on Sunday night. Be sure to head to the yard to see your favorite team maneuver their way through the standings.Just don't do what this BVB reporter did and eat something off before the Friday game. I felt like I just ate a "bush league" vendor dog at the Hoboken finals in the dead heat of August. Nothing that a little after game "BVB beer cheer" at the park did not handle but, it was suffering I could have done without.

May 28th, 2006 - Red Sox host a BVB "Day at the Dome" event....
BVB's own Red Sox arranged and hosted an event at the Rogers Centre where participating BVB players got to play an exhibition game against the BVB Red Sox team. Although the game score and play did not fair well, the experience was wonderful for those involved. Read more on the BVB Red Sox website at RedSox.BVBBaseball.com......

May 26th, 2006 - Hobos break up Tribe momentum ....Yanks give Cards a plucking...
BVB League action was fierce on Friday night with the Hobos taking on the 2-0 Indians. The game was a slow start due to field conditions but the action picked up quickly. With the Hobos fresh out of the winter stable, they still showed strength, matching every offensive effort by the Tribe. The Tribe's spirits were crushed after a 3 run homer hit by Casey Cosgrove (Hobos) in the 3rd inning. The Indians fought to recover the score with a tying run left at third in the last inning.
The Yankees hit the field for the first time this season for their team, in fresh new uniforms. The style and "bling" must have instilled confidence, with them dominating the game against the Cardinals. The game was a high scoring effort with the final being 14-9. The Cardinals put up a good fight including a grand slam bomb by #24 Jay Hodgson, racking up his first for the regular season.
Come out to watch the scheduled games for Tuesday night at Millcroft where the Red Sox face the Cubs and the Pirates are matched with the X-Men. BVB baseball has started a good momentum now....the true spirit of the game stands tall.....
Don't forget to watch for the BVB Red Sox and BVB "All Stars" team hit the field at the Rogers Center after the Jays game for their own exhibition game at the Dome. Your very own BVB sports writer will be at the game to watch the action and will report back shortly.

May 24th, 2006 - Cubbies pound X-Men, Tribe on the hunt for a winning streak..
BVB action continued on Tuesday night with the X-Men taking the field against the Cubs. The game was a needed push for the Cubs with a win recovery from their first regular season game loss against the Cardinals. The official score was not posted at time of print. The Cardinals faced the Indians for the late game. The Tribe started off with defensive troubles with 4 runs being given up in the first inning. After shaking off the mental barrier, the Indians came back strong with their offence in the 4th and 5th inning. With the game tied at 6-6 late in the 5th inning, #13 Darrick Houghton from the Indians laid down a Sac bunt that put two runners in scoring position for #41 Dan Pokoradi to take the lead with a 2 RBI hit to centerfield. The game played into the 6th inning with the Indians providing additional runs but, due to time, the score was reverted back to the 5th inning finish.
Come out to watch the scheduled games for Friday night at Nelson where the Indians face the Hobos and the Yanks are matched with the Cardinals. The Indians have got the war paint ready to continue their winning streak while the Yanks and Hobos are anxious to hit the yard and show their stuff for the season. May 16th, 2006 - BVB season still plagued with weather with only half a start....
BVB was still troubled by May weather conditions with the 6PM game of the Yankees vs. Hobos being cancelled due to the diamond conditions. With a little work and patience, the 8:30PM game was kicked off with the Pirates facing the Red Sox. Despite a number of errors on both sides through the games, a solid match was played with the Red Sox gaining an early lead through the first three innings. The first inning included a home run bomb by Darcy Osipenko. The Pirates attempted to battle back by putting up 3 runs in the 4th and 5th inning but, the gap could not be closed when the Sox racked up another 4 runs in their final two innings at bat.....setting the final at 11-6 for the Sox.
The next schedule games will not be until after the long weekend, on May 23rd with the Cubs facing the Xmen and the Cardinals battling the Indians. Make sure you hit the yard to watch the action.

May 12th, 2006 - The BVB regular season kicks off with a slow start.
Friday was a weird start to the 2006 BVB regular season. Due to previous weather conditions, games at Nelson Park were cancelled due to the conditions of the field. The Yankees vs. Pirates & Hobos vs. Red Sox games were postponed to an alternate date (TBA). We are sure that it an emotional hit "below the belt" for the team players that were all geared up to hit the yard. Keep an eye on the schedule in the next while for the rescheduled dates.
Four other teams did get to feel the grass below their feet on Friday night. The Cubs played the Cardinals with a 9-5 decision for the birds. The Cardinals took an early lead in the game and defensively held on to it tight until the 7th inning. The Cubs brought out a round of pitchers but, the Cardinals bats were still strong. The Xmen played the Indians with the tribe taking their first win in a year for a 8-3 decision. The Indians pitching was strong, holding the Xmen bats down. The Tribe racked up the first official home run by Joe Stephens (#19) for a two run bomb in the bottom of the first, setting the pace for the rest of the game.
The next set of games are scheduled for Tuesday May 16th where the Yankees match up against the Hobos and the Pirates face the Red Sox. Head out the park and check out the action! The 2006 BVB season is off and running....it looks like some good ball is going to be played.

May 5th, 2006 - The 2006 BVB baseball season kicked off Friday night at 6pm with all teams competing in an exhibition game.
Team spirits were high with new players to the league pushing hard to show their stuff and existing members testing out how much they still have left in the "old gas tank." We had the Red Sox facing the Xmen with a 9-5 finish for the Sox. The Indians up against the Cardinals, who were on the field sporting fresh new uniform colours for the season. The Indians took a 13-0 win with the tribe holding off the Cardinals from reaching the bases until late in the third. The Cubs were matched up with the Pirates for a 8-3 win for the Bucks. The high scores were attributed to a number of home runs with three being clocked by the Pirates (Carroll, Ware, Blanchet) and two by the Cubs (Horgan, Phillips). The Hobos hit the field against the Yankees as well with a 6-5 score in favor of the Hobos. Two home runs were scored by both the Hobos (Pomfret, Lalonde) and Yankees (Szitas, Patterson).
Some of the League teams partook in the after game season kickoff gathering at Great Lakes Grille. A lower than usual turnout and League management is hoping this is not a sing of season to come. Come out to watch your favorite BVB team battle it out at the yard on Friday night on May 12th.
Your BVB Sports writing staff will keep you posted through the season of the action as we see & hear it on the field and in the BVB Management Clubhouse.

April 14th, 2006 - BVB has set the gears in motion.
The season opener exhibition games have been set. Through a random draw by an impartial party, the team match-ups have been set. There is a certain "smell in the air" that makes a ball player's hair stand straight up on the back of his neck at this time of the year. The long winter is over and the start of baseball is fast approaching.
Be sure to come out and support your favorite team on opening night. There will also be a gathering afterwards (site TBD) where stories can be swapped and drinks can be hoisted in the spirit of the game we call "Baseball."

April 12th, 2006 - BVB lays the foundation for a 2006 season start.
Well BVB Baseball fans and players....the start of the 2006 season is drawing near. The dates have been set for our official start of the season with a set of Exhibition games on May 5th with plans for a BVB kick-off celebration afterwards (place TBD). The first official regular season set of games will be on May 12th. The City of Burlington has not released the park dates yet so a published schedule can not be released. The Board is expecting it soon but, no promises. As soon as the Board has agreed, it will be released to team coaches and posted on the website for all sports fans.
The competition looks fierce this year with a number of teams signing players over the winter break. Some team trades have occurred along with an injection of old BVB team members taking a crack at it again. The 2005 Vintage Champion Hobos and Legend Champion X-Men will have to watch their backs as the other teams attempt to overstep them in 2006.
All in all, it is good to see BVB setting up for another fast and fun summer of baseball.....see you at the yard sports fans.

April 1st, 2006 - BVB kicks off the new season with a new look.
BVBBASEBALL.com has launched. Burlington Vintage Baseball has started a new venture with a dynamic website built by their very own Ottis Goulbourne (#46 BVB Indians - Field Coach/Player). Taking over the duties from Lee Mackey (#29 BVB RedSox Manager/Player) who faithfully and honorably ran the BVB website duties for three years during his tenure on the BVB Board of Executives, Ottis was requested to build some new functions that were beyond the means of most. He took this challenge and provided the structure that will help put BVB on the internet's proverbial map. Although the complete package is not complete yet with the team functions, the work thus far is outstanding. Please take a few minutes to browse around our new site to see all the new added areas and information.
Besides the League web area, the BVB Indians team site is the only active team section for it is being used as a test case to build the same function for every BVB team. The hope is to have dynamic pages that every team will have the ability to update on their own stats and information through simple on-line forms (like filling out an application on-line). Also, as part of the website space we now lease, other functions are available for our use like custom and easy to remember email addresses for the entire league body and access to information we did not have as readily as before.
As the Director of Media and Registration, the tools built in this website along with the features it provides for our teams, it will make my (and the BVB Board's) job a lot easier. If you see Ottis at the park, be sure to acknowledge his accomplishments for the better of our League.
